Thumbs up RockCrusher Dana 60

Just to give you guys a another axle to think about. I have just installed a RockCrusher rear high pinon Dana 60 in my rubicon. I'm running 37" tires and I was tried of breaking the rear axle. Yes I did upgrade to Supieror axleshafts in the Dana 44, still broke them. So after looking around I went with this one. I did have to do some fab work for a rear sway bar mountsand axle vent. This thing does weight a ton and from the guys that are running them, they had nother bad to say about them. Just a FYI for those that are looking for axles.

Depends on how they're built. Got a 60 from a late 70s Ford in my backyard that's FF. Dodge put a semi-float 60 in their late'60s/early '70s musclecars. Incidentally, I believe those SF 60s are 5x4.5" bolt pattern and very close to XJ/YJ/TJ width.

Just curious why you didn't go with a full float?

One thing I have never broke is a rear axle shaft... on the d35, the 8.8, or my 44....

You must get it too hard :tonka:

i run a locked 60 rear and have only sheared one axleshaft, and it slid right out, used a magnet to get the other half, and put the new one in. 15 minute job.

You have a full float 60, though, right? With 30 spline dana 44 size shafts? Most factory full-floating Dana 60s are not using 35 spline 1.5" shafts..

John, who make the RockCrusher? Currie, Dynatrac, etc?

Also what did you do with the front axle bolt pattern? Well spacers that convert to 5 on 5.5?

14-bolts use 30 spline, 1.5" shafts, not 35; if that's the comparison you're trying to make.

And there's a big difference in strength between a semi-float 30-spline shaft and a full float 30-spline shaft, based on the full float vs semi float.

BDR - did you go 35 or 40 spline?

No, not talking about 14 bolts, talking about dana 60s. Many/most full floating Dana 60s like in a 90's Dodge 3/4 ton, or that there 70's F-250, have dana 44 size shafts. Sure they are full floating, but still 1.31" 30 spline shafts..

Dana 70s had the 1.5" 35 spline, as do semi floats. I'm sure at least some of the FF rears had the big shafts.

FF vs SF isn't a huge difference in strength when it comes to twisting a shaft from brute torque..

Thanks BDR....I didn't know Rockcrusher was an actual brand/company like Dynatrac or Currie...just thought it was the name of the axle, like RockJock, or ProRock, etc.

Anyways what did you do about your front axle bolt pattern?

That isn't the majority of shaft failure though.

it's actually a dana 60 from a '73 chassis with the larger spline (18 i think, but not %100 sure)

Probably a 16 spline... If you ever break them, I'd bore out the spindles and upgrade to 35 spline 1.5" stuff..

I used to have a 1978 F-250 club cab long bed.. wish I still had that truck, was a lot of fun, but I didn't know what I was doing back then..

In general, full floating rear Dana 60s have Dana 44 axleshafts. 30 spline 1.31" shafts.

Dodge 3/4 & 1 tons from the 90s are the worst.. they have 32 spline 1.31" shafts in the front axle as well. Well, mid 70s F-350s I believe ran 30 spline inner/19 spline outers like Dana 44s..
