tube fender design

Just a preliminary design i throw togeather at work while waiting for the boss to give me sometihng to do.

I was debating whether to weld on steal like most or if I'd do sometihng different like welding some tads on and bolting panels in. they could be anything... steal, alumunum, plastic, rubber.... wood :tonka:

on the back side and the grill I'll use the stock mounting bolts. I plan on cutting the old fender off at the hood flange and drilling some holes, maybe 4, and bolting it to the tube fender. I'll add some reinforcments and gussets, and a place to attach the hood latches.
what do you think:

not bad. I need a set with a 3" flare added and about 3" taller, or wherever that first groove in the hood is.

I expect the design on my desk by 9:00 monday morning.

I thought about doing both.

The 3" flare in pretty much a no-brainer. It could be any size.

The 3" taller would be a little bit more work, but mostly it be a matter of modifying the hood to match.

Seems like that groove in the hood would be the perfect line to cut to. Perfect fence for the plasma cutter.

yeah, but then what? weld on a flange? you wouldn't want just an edge, it's be floppy as hell.

Yeah, weld on a flange, or maybe leave it a little long and roll it under.

I guess I haven't looked into it that far yet because I haven't made the fenders for it.

Without the body line of the hood acting as a stiffer, the panel might flop around. Even if you did roll the edge. You might want to cut a some material and make an inner stucure, with stiffer beads in it. One of the main reasons the JK's hood has a full inner panel, unlike the TJ's 5 peice design.

yeah, you probably would want to add some structure to the hood. Not only are you losing a body line, your losing 3 inches of depth and the ends of the reinforcments where it ties to the main panel. And the hood's already pretty floppy to begin with.

the correct way to lose the 3 inches would be to section the hood. You would remove a 3 inch strip from the side and weld the upper to the lower sections. It is not vey complicated at all just need a little lead or fiberglass afterwords to smooth it out .
