how does the 5.2 pull?

Well this winter im hoping to have enough money to buy a 95-98 ram 1500. Im not going to be towing a ton with it but occasionally I will. I know its gonna be a bit underpowered but plan on getting a trailer with dual brakes, make sure the trucks brakes are perfect. I would rather have a 5.9 gasser but was wondering how a 5.2 would do pulling a 6000lb trailer and car/truck?

also how good are these engines usually good to?

A 318 will pull any damn thing you want. And run 20000 zillion miles. Literally. My dads 94 ram has 180k on it, not a damn problem

318's only have 15-20 HP less and 30 ft lbs less than a 360.

I personally prefer the 360 though...hehe.

1995 Dodge Ram 1500 5.2L here

Towed a 83 Ford F-250 High Boy no problem. Those old fords are built like tanks too. At least 6000 pounds.

My parents have a 2000 dodge ram van with a 318, before that we had like a 96 with the same motor.

We routinely pull a 28 foot travel trailer with it

I have pulled my Cherokee on a HEAVY ass uhaul trailer behind it. easily more than 6000 lbs.

It has factory 3.73s (or something slighyly lower) in the rearend. It is no cummins, but it has pulled that travel trailer through the mountains numerous times and to south dakota and back, and around lake huron, and through the UP, and to florida, and to Texas, and numerous trips up north with NO trouble.

The only thing we do is turn of the OD ( per the manual) when we tow, keep or speeds down for safety, and run the tow packages with an auxillary trans cooler. Going up some of the bigger inclines it sometimes gets a bit hot, and takes some downshifting and pedal to the floor to make it to the top, but we've never not made it to the top either ( and those were some LONG, STEEP mountains)

It will do just fine just be smart, use weight distribution and good brakes. It pulled my cherokee just fine but stopping that uhaul trailer with surge brakes (in the winter, during a snowstorm) was scary.

***edit--just reread the original post. you want to tow a 6000lb trailer AND a vehicle?! thats over 10,000lbs of trailer, plus gas, consumables, people, fluids, tools etc. I would NOT advise that unless you have a well equipped one ton, not only for power to move but for safety as well.******
