D-day

For those who care, but especially for those who don't :

....62 years ago US, British and Canadian troops were fighting on the the shores of France in the begining stages of the Allied invasion of Europe....this operation was the crucible upon which the free nations of the world exerted their will against facism and tyranny....it was one of the most horrific, and pivotal, days of the 20th century.....

.....to all those who participated, in any way.....

I just remember sitting in the theater when Saving Private Ryan first came out. An older couple were sitting next to me and during the first 10-15 minutes of the movie during the intense invasion I heard him whisper to his wife that he was there during the real thing. He had tears running down his face. Suddenly I did too as it went from being just a great movie to reality.

I'm calling all of the veterans I know today, and I think we should all call or write an e-mail to a veteran today to show our appreciation for their great sacrafices.

They put their lives on the line...the least we could do is make a 5 minute phone call.

My father was on a destroyer escort that provided submarine protection for the cruisers and battleships that were bombarding Omaha Beach on D-Day. As a reservist, he was called up again for the Inchon landings in Korea. We just got his high-school diploma as part of a program President Bush signed to recognize the WW2 veterans who enlisted before completing high school (as often happened).

His father was on an amphibious assault ship in the pacific (at the same time) where he got to do the Guadalcanal / Iwo Jima / etc... island-hopping tour all the way to Japan. As a landing boat coxswain he earned 2 silver stars, 1 bronze star, and multiple purple hearts and was in Tokyo harbor when the surrender was signed.

Since neither of them are still with us, I was showing my kids pictures and the document my grandfather got for attending the surrender a few weeks ago. Greatest generation, indeed.

My older sister was in the Army (every family's gotta have one) and worked at the treatment / rehab center in San Francisco where the seriously injured troops from Vietnam were treated.

Maybe it's growing up around all that (the son and grandson of CPOs) that gave me my particular point of view on these things. God bless the ones that fell on duty, the ones that came home and have left us, and the ones that are still here with us.

My Dad's dad was flying bombing missions over the ETO throughout '44. We buried him in 2003, with his uniform in his hands.

My Mom's dad was on Iwo Jima, and Okinawa, he's still with us.

A big salute to both, and all the others who did what was necessary.

I have visited Pearl Harbor twice, a very hard place to go to and not get emotional.

For the country that forgets it's defenders that country it self will be forgotten.

around Veteran's day the kids accross the street came over to my house and said thank you I asked her what for she simply said for protecting her it surprised me. I think she is 7 or 8. That made my tour worth it.

Bless the veterans.
My grandfather served in WWII, although he never saw combat, a lot of his friends did.
We had one gentleman come to our class when we were in elementary school to speak to us about D-day. Unfortunately, most of us in the class were too young to understand the depth of what he was telling us.
I only wish I more of these guys were still around. They truly are the greatest generation.
