sbc short vs. long water pump

ok well in my newest cj project i droping a chevy 350 in it (the engine it had when i bought it) and was wondering even though it had a long water pump to begin with can i replace the long one with a short one? or will that screw up the mounting on my power steering and alternator? can i just put a shorter pully on the short water pump to make everything thing fit again? thanks

If you change the pump you have to change the pulley on the crankshaft and waterpump and the brackets for the alt and p/s. Usually the bracket for the altenator on a short w/p puts it on the drivers side and puts it farther away from the motor.

x2...I kept the long with my 383.

used a long water pump here also, but i went electric fans. there is not much clearance to be spared with my setup.

thats why i was wondering if its easy to just put on a shorty because if clearance of an electric fan on the radiator. BigBlkYJ do you have HEI ignition or just a regular distributer? im facing clearance issues with trying to fit my HEI and a larger electric fan.

i have an HEI and about 2" yet from that to the firewall. the fans are pretty close to the water pump pulley, but it all depends on the pulley setup you use also. ill take some pics tomorrow if i get a chance, and ill look around the PC to see if i have any.

I'm running the small cap dist and dual elect fans. The water pump pully sorta fits in between the fans.
