A/C Clutches...

Anyone replace one? All I can find in the parts store is the whole unit, they tell me the clutch is non-replaceable, but what the hell do they know

I think I may be in the same situation right now. My shit won't turn on and power is present all the way to the compressor. Is yours slipping, or non-responsive?

Just replace the entire unit....even if the clutch is servicable, you will more than likely fukc it up when taking it off.

I have replaced many clutches....never had to replace the whole compressor. With the clutch kit you get the bearing/pulley, the magnet coil, and the driven plate along with the shims for installing the clutch.

I have done a few as well... what threw me off is no one offers a clutch kit for my truck...

At any rate I got a full compressor from a yard on the way tomorrow, I guess I will see if the clutch comes off

1. Remove nut on compressor shaft.
2. Slide off outer wheel.
3. Remove snap ring.
4. Pull serp pulley (use a pully puller, I used a prybar... gently)
5. Pull next snap ring.
6. Pull magnet.

Then install the new parts back in. Took maybe 30 min?

I have a bare working compressor for sale now if anyone needs one

The Dealer was surprised when I mentioned that you couldn't find a clutch kit. They thought they were available in the aftermarket.

Anyway - they claim my lines are leaking. The compressor apparently does not turn on when there isn't enough refrigerant in the system? I'm not 100% sure if I believe it, but a leak after 8 years is reasonable. The real problem was that nobody local had the lines and they had to order them from Dallas. That would take a couple days and does not help me for this weekend, when I need to use the truck on some long runs. This was the factory charge I finally lost, mind you. Whatever leak there is, its not that big. What they didn't actually tell me was whether the compressor ran after they did the test charge this morning - I just called back for that specific piece of info. If the bitch does run, I'm going to order the lines, charge it for the weekend, and get the work done next week.

If it doesn't, I may take that compressor off your hands. What's the part # and actual motor/year it was pulled from?

It was pulled from a 95 dak.

Model U 4605.

There is a MIN and MAX refrigerant pressure window in which the CPU will engage the clutch.

If it's a slow leak you could buy a refil kit with some gauges and fit it to the highside of the limit and it would probably last all weekend if not longer.

Yeah, that's the plan - if these asshats at Szott Dodge would call me back to confirm that the compressor actually works. I'm beginning to suspect that they did not test charge it and assumed it all leaked out because I brought it to them evac'd, even though I told them that it was evac'd.
