a question

uh im doing a lift on an 88 xj and the top shackle bolt wont come out, it turns but it just spins...i dont think theres a nut on the other side of the rail...but will someone help me plz?? i know im a newbie so can i get somehelp...thanks

Torches my friend...

Those bolts can be picked up at home depot, or any hardware store

Torch off the end, and pound the hell out of it with something

What are you talking about? If he torches off the head of the bolt than he still has the bolt going through the spring bushing and unibody frame rail, with the spinning nut inside the rail. Then he would be really srcewed.

What you need to do is get a sawzall and cut the bolt on the inside of the shackle, next to the fuel tank. Pull the cut off portion of the bolt out, and your shackle will drop out. Here's the shitty part: you will need to remove the rear bumper and cut a hole on the body just behind the shackle hole. Then you need to fish out the old spinning nut, and fish a locknut back in there to resecure your shackle. Put the vehicle on the ground with all of the weight on the vheicle before tightening the bolts. Then reinstall the bumper.

so yeah i took CC advice and went out there sunday morning and was like wait that isnt going to work...then i thought...hey i got a sawzall so i did exactly what u just told me to do!! but i still have to cut a hole in the back of the frame rail but ill do that tomarrow cuz today i finished the front lift, and helped my buddy take his front axle out on his jeep--now i have 2 jeeps im working on!! an 88 and an 85, but the 85 will be full width and a 302 and auto tranny and 36" TSL's---but the 88 will just have a 4.5" lift with 31" TSL's--but i love working on both so im shooting for the 88 to be done by the end of the week and the 85 to be dont by at least spring, cant wait to see how they wheel!!!!

100% dead on.

If you have the luxury of access to a plasma cutter you can cut out the rear uniframe rail cap, then cut a circle in the sheetmetal around the spinning nut head (this is pretty tight quarters) Then you will be able to get a socket on that spinning nut and take it out from there. It's a serious PITA, and a common problem on XJ's.

the lift is done!! woot woot!!! now i have this problem, for some reason the motors gone!!:tonka: oh thats right i pulled it too!! yeah pulled it to replace it...theres a big hole in the block just above oil pan, hahahaha, yeah im pulling the trans too, so i can hook the motor trans together and put it in!!! ill get pics as soon as i can!!
