DaVinci Code
I just finished the book and plan on going to see the movie.
The book seemed to stir up lots of controversy(sp?) so what does everyone think? Discuss! |

The book is a very entertaining read, and I'll see the movie.
As far as controversy, people just need to remember that it's fiction and chill out. I'm reading Angels and Demons right now, which is the prequel to DVC. It's really good so far too. |

If you ask me, the catholic church reacting so negatively to the book and movie only reinforces the idea that they are covering something up. I personally dont think it holds much merit, but I also dont think we know the whole story about Jesus. The bible leaves out many chapters in his life.
Another thing that is a little fishy but has never influenced my faith in either directions is how some groups think that Mary remained a virgin. What man marrys a woman and doesnt get any.. ever? The bible clearly says that Jesus had brothers. So in a way, I could see how if the catholics knew that jesus had a child or had sex they would try their damnedest to cover it up. The thing that puzzles me is why? Sex within the marital bond is not a sin. |

I dont know, but i think thats an optimistic belief by many. I dont know of anywhere where it says she was a virgin all her life, just when jesus was concieved. I dont believe for a second that she stayed that way forever, unless joseph was getting some on the side.
As for the book thought it was excellent. raises many interesting issues and questions about catholicism. As for it being true, I dont believe that like many people do, but I think it is a possibility, thats why the conspiracy has run so rampant. I respect all the symbols that Dan Brown integrated into one conspiracy theory; that is some good talent (evin if he did steal the plot line or whatever) Last edited by Kawierider; May 11th, 2006 at 07:52 PM. |

Damn good books. Both of them. Just remember that they're fiction and you'll be ok.
The one thing I don't like about the books is their effect on the weak minded. I had a guy come in to Murrays that talked to me for half an hour about how the Masons and the Illuminati run the world, etc. It was kind of scary... he believed everything he read and has borderline psychotic paranoia.

I know it's fiction, and won't have a problem with it,
but I seen this think on TV once, it was about how the Mason's do run the world. So it must be true. :tonka:

It is an entertaining read, and we are planning on seeing the movie.
Its primarily false, as well, but that doesn't take away from it. (I'm catholic, technically, go to church for xmas to make the family happy, but it has no standing on my opinion of the book. But the fact that i'm a student of history, and my wife has a masters in history, we both got a laugh out of some of it..).. LOL, want a laugh, go look up pictures of the guys who wrote holy blood, holy grail. That book is a joke. Interesting points, but based on the dossier secrete(sp?) which are now admitted fakes.

I have heard scholars discuss and it appears the author did a great job as a fiction writer of twisting real facts to draw in the readers. For instance, there is a reference that Mary of Magdeline is Jesus' "wife" as translated in some arabic language. However, the bible clearly states that the translation is from the Greek not arabic. The greek translation is like "friend". In other words, if you did not know that the word was from a Greek translation (something the author leaves out) then you might mis-interpret the translation. |

EPH 5:25 "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing (Or having cleansed) her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless." EPH 5:28 "In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church - 30 for we are members of his body. 31 "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." 32 This is a profound mystery - but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband. |
