6.2 diesel

I looked at buying a 85 chevy 3 quarter ton 4x4 with a 6.2 diesel in it. Are these engines any good? I took it for a drive and it drove well but was a little sluggish past 50 mph. It has 88 thousand miles on it.How about the fuel milage? I read these were good on fuel is that true?

you picked a good year. I think you will find it needs to be run, the older ones didn't like to sit around. the fuel system is the weakest link. you can run some fuel conditioner threw it and see if the performance comes back.
as for glow plugs if they work don't mess with them. each side of the engine pulls 55 amps when testing the circut. if you have a low draw then one is out. flush your cooling system and make sure its working proper, any leaks will burn up a 6.2. have fun and you should expect about 18-20 mpg.
ps change the fuel filter if it hasn't been done after running conditioner threw it. who knows what you'll knock loose.

How about the new diesel fuel that is going to be on the market. Will I have to change something on the engine to make it run right?

probablly not. it might need a bump in pump timing if the smoke patterns off.

I have had a few of these with minimal problems. Multiple drivers is usually the cause of death for most that I have seen. Some of the previous post were right on about checking cooling systems and fuel problems. Any easy way to test your glowplugs is to pull off the wire and use a test light. Put the alligator clip on the positive terminal and touch the end of the plug. Should have a bright light. If one is dimmer than rest or doesn't light at all time to replace it. Also I have had a few injector pumps on these start leaking down the shaft. So keep your eye on your oil also. Not sure about the new diesel fuel scenario but the military ran jet fuel in alot of these with minimal problems. At least that is my best guess at what the clear liquid in the tank was.

They are fine but not high power motors.

Mine has 250K and is still alive.

Mine likes 10% bio.

they do not take hard abuse or heavy loads well.
