City Council Approves Cell Phone Ban

Drivers in the city of Detroit will have to end their calls, as a cell phone ban has been approved.

The Detroit City Council passed a cell phone ban for the city of Detroit on Wednesday.

Council voted 8 - 1, with Sheila Cockrel as the only opposing vote.

Council members said drivers could still use hands-free phones.

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick must also approve the ban.

Violators can be ticketed and fined.

You know what I think the stupid thing is. Hands free doesn't make it safer....you're still distracted by your conversation. Your mind is not really on what's around you it's too busy listening and interpreting what you are hearing to really drive effectively. You can still get where you're going....but you're really not paying as much attention as you should be. I know..I've done it :tonka:

You all apparently feel different than me on this. I cannot stand when dumb fVcks that aren't paying attention drive like shit. Either way it doesn't effect me, cause 1st I don't go near Detroit, and 2nd if im on my cell, which is rare, its hands free.

bad drivers on a cel lpiss me off to , i am offended this passed almost unanimously while important issues are bickered over for years and years, nothing is fixed and stuff just get postponed and on and on. In a city where major parts do not have working street lights for entire neigborhoods for YEARS, the grass isnt cut, etc. There should be a STATE law about towns that are almost in recievership passing dumb laws that dont fix any major issue. God damn i hate that town In the grand scheme cell phones are a non issue. What if someone on a phone crashes into me, can i even get a cop to come out in less than 3 hours. The 9-11 dispatch system doesnt even work. Whole town is a joke.

EDIT: the more i thought about this, the real appeal to the city is they can bust suburban peepz balls and fine us, also pull over young thugs and search their cars in theroy (even though it seems many of the cops turn a blind eye to the real thugs cause they dont want the hassle).

Also obvious appeal is this is something the peole have to do, and the cops can enforce or not as they see fit or as they need more money, i cant remember the last time the city imposed some sort of duty or burden on itself to do something.

In my years as a cab driver I had more near-misses with jackasses yapping on cell phones instead of paying Goddamned attention than all the other reasons for near-misses combined.

I agree that Detoilet has bigger fish to fry, but this is one of the few micro-managing laws I approve of. Hopefully the punsihment will include a hefty fine and the transformation of a cell phone into a suppository.

Ok if your like me at all, you NEED to be on your phone in Detroit. Because your either lost or you just got done getting a ticket because you made a "prohibit left turn" even though there's a sign saying you could. Grrrr No offense to anyone, I wish that city would have something happen to it!!!

The dumbfucks should get a ticket for their bad driving, not being on a phone.

If I drive all day on a phone and dont break any laws why should I get a ticket for being on the phone.

Hands free drivers are worse in my opinion.
