What year turbo-diesels are the "good years"?

I found a 04 truck I really like, and thinking about getting it. 77,000 miles on it, but it runs like a champ.

If you're going to get one get an newer 7.3. The 6.0 has had something like up to 60 recalls (according to the last petersons mag I picked up) and has a tendancy to blow head gaskets. Ford fixed this problem by coming out with the new 6.4L diesel with the next model year(I think).

I don't know if this helps but I usually float btw here and the f-150 forums. They have a forum for engines and superdutys, but I've noticed that unlike here they don't have as many gearheads that work in industry so their advice is questionable in my mind.

Ok, so if 2004 is considered the new engine, when was it started to be made? I am going off the old engine being much more reliable from someone who knew what they were talking about, either bones or kaiserjeep.

I guess I can't have the new body style and the reliable engine.

we are still building the 6.0. the 6.4 will be out in about 15 months. Any diesel from 98 to mid 04 is the solid 7.3L. I personally wouldn't be scared of a 6.0L, but thats your choice.

I wouldn't be afraid of a 2004 with a 7.3, plus it should still have warranty. The 6.0 seems to be hit or miss, either you get a really good one or you get a pile.

Very true - I know a ford tech who says he's seen ones with a ton of problems at 20k, and some with only maintenance at 220k

The most common problem with the 6.0's where the injectors. With the millage that one has if they were bad they would probably allready changed at the dealership. Most of the ones I have heard had problems with were early on. Less then 50k. But I also agree about the hit or miss thing. Have heard great and bad things from a lot off people.

I have to give bones and kaiserjeep credit for info like that. Like I said before this site has more gearheads working in industry. That was something that drew me to this site. Its not just a bunch red-necks making half-assed assesments. This site definatly has the people that can back up informed decisions. Props to GL.

a few of my buddies have powerstrokes, a 2002 7.3, 2001 7.3, and 2 2004's with the 6.0's all of them have been stock and modded at one time or another and none have had serious issues

There have been a issues with turbine issues & shaft play.(:tonka:) The problem is that Ford isn't being helpful at warranting parts that should normally be warranted.

My Father's company worked on the assembly lines for the 6.0, and always told me not to buy it, based on the preproduction issues they saw with it.

The 7.3 powerstroke has a good reputation.

Mid year 2003 they switched to the 6.0 incase you are still wondering.
