Axle Truss

Looking for some info on making some axle trusses. I have seen several types, some that are basically rods from one side to the other. Also seen some that are cut out of square tube.

Basically looking for the pitfalls and what works best.

Thanks

I don't run one, but this is what I've read
a truss on the bottom works best for jumping and crap like that, but sucks for trail riding because it hangs up on obsticles
I don't see any problem running them on top of your axle, except maybe hitting your body during compression
some guys integrate their link brackets into their truss, if you want to build a custom suspension
if your gonna weld one on, some people say to be careful because the heat can warp your axle housing
also, keep your ground close so you don't weld your bearings, etc.

I saw in a magazine last fall... not sure wich one, but they took a peice of 1.5" DOM tubing i think and welded it under a d30 on a soa swap running 38's All the did was make the right bend and welded it to the housing and inuckles looked like it would work well

Something you have to be VERY careful with, if welding on a truss, is to make sure it fits completely snug before welding.

If you have a gap or the truss isn't straight, then as you weld it, the heating of the metal will warp the axle.

Thanks for the tips. I am going to place it on the top of the axle for clearance reasons. The warping and other damage was what I was concerned about mainly.

Thanks again

I've used trusses on 3 drag cars I've built. The first one fit very well and still warped the hell out of it. Ended up having to cut of the flanges and set it up in a jig to realign. The next two I cut the flanges off and reattached after the truss was installed. Every one of them warped like crazy. It seemed as though the fit of the truss didn't matter much.

Dunno what yer putting it on but watch oil pan clearance under full compression. I have seen SWB jeeps dent the oil pan with no truss with crappy bump stops.
