Why Toyota?

It seems like anytime you see in a magazine or on a forum, if somebody is building a small pickup truck, its almost always a Toyota. I just wanted to know what the deal is, what is it that is so great about them. I don't know, which is why I'm asking, I mean I haven't had any experience with them. So really what i want to know is, what do they have that an s-10, ranger, dakota, or something domestic, doesn't have?

mainly because the vehicle is lighter, easier to run dual tcases and the axles are very strong with more grounds clearance.

There are plenty of rangers out there though.

Well, I'm building one...

I think primarily, despite what so many of the UAW raised people around here want to admit, they are tough trucks. Easily the best small truck of any manufacturer..

Looking at whats out there, primarily, you had Toyotas, Fords, and Chevys.... yeah, there were Mistubishi might-maxs/Dodge D100s, Dodge dakotas..but those 3 are the big 3(including the Isuzu Hombre{S10} and Mazda B-series{Ford Ranger})..

The Chevy S-10, well, never known for reliability was it? Early 80s models rusted out, had a crappy 2.8 V6, reliability issues with the 700R4s, etc..

Ford rangers with the TTB front end made decent wheelers, as can Bronco IIs..

Early Toyotas had the HUGE advantage of having front solid axles, something nothing else but the Jeep Comanche offered. So there are lots of parts out there. I have two solid-axle toyotas myself. The axles are strong(roughly equivelent to Dana 44s) with tons of aftermarket support. Its easy and cheap to swap these into later trucks.

In general, Mechanical stuff has a lot to do with it. Toyotas are stout. Toyotas have been used all over the world in the worst conditions, like Rovers and early Jeeps. The 22R series of engine is extremely reliable, I have 401,000 miles on one of mine, with nothing but routine maintenance. The transfer cases in most are strong gear driven cases.

In terms of aftermarket, there is a much better aftermarket than any domestic truck. So parts are CHEAP. The reduction unit in the gear driven transfer cases is bolt-on, so for less than $300(plus a donor T-case), you can do a Marlin Crawler dual low range setup. High steer can be done for a couple hundred including DOM rods.

Lots of trucks out there, so theres lots of parts to be had.

Strong, reliable, great aftermarket, etc..

Here's mine, hopefully its driving next week:

Toyotas are 200% overbuilt in stock form. I would venture to say that they we one of the stoutest 4x4's you could buy right off the lot.

Toyota did not do alot of changes from 79-93. Alot of parts are interchangable amoungst models, tried and true. Toyota axles are as strong as d44's, a little lighter to boot. The aftermarket for toyota drivetrain is AWESOME! Affordable upgrades, easy to upgrade, and you get alot of bang for your buck when building a toyota.

In my cruiser, I am using all the drivetrain from toyota pickups. 22re, L52(5spd), dual mini truck cases, mini truck axles....ect.

The only none toyota parts are the GM TRE's, TJ coils, and whatever aftermarket parts I bought to upgrade toyota stuff.

I use to have a JEEP with a 350 TPI, d44 front, d60 rear....blah blah...I wheeled with my friend jake who had a 86' toyota truck. 22r, 5spd, mostly stock except for lift and tires....We would wheel the same places, I would always manage to break parts. In 3 years, jake only broke one transmission and 1 birfield. He wheeled more challenging stuff then I could ever imagine doing in my JEEP. I basically got tired of working the JEEP and went and got a toyota 4runner.

Brian, this is the FJ that I saw this summer when I came down and got that top-shift T-case from you?

I'm hoping to be building a hi-lux drivetrain'd flatfender next year..

Not true. Anytime I look at a magazine or check a forum, I'm reading about an S-10 build. :miff:

A S-10, Ranger, Dakota don't even belong in the same 4x4 sentence as a Toyota. Like Monkeyevil said Toy's are way overbuild from the factory.

I missed a CJ2a on ebay by 5$ lol. Then the FJ came around, glad I went with the FJ for wheelbase reasons. It looks good with 103" wheelbase, a willys would look a little goofy with that long of a wheelbase.

Yeah, I'd agree. I'll push it a few inches but not more than 83-84" I think.

i'm thinking I'll keep my Toyota truck for long wheelbase stuff (107" wheelbase) and use the CJ more for other things...

Brimy, would you go longer if you had the choice? I'm at 112" and I'm curious how well (or poor) I will be able to turn on the trails. It will be stable, but awkward...

I would say anthing about 100"-105" is just right for places like the badlands. The extra wheelbase will help you in climbs, and decents. I am happy with 103" on mine, but I also have a 90* departure angle.

Tire size is also a factor, with larger tired/higher belly heights/ being able to use more wheelbase.

I bet yours is pretty good with 112" with the 38.5s..

Bones all I would worry about is your front shaft... it's pretty vulnerable how far it is down.

Mine don't hang below my springs and are candy-canned all the way down
